The Vine and the Branches

Most church-goers are familiar with the parable of the vine and the branches (John 15:1).  If you have been attending church long, you have probably heard a sermon on this topic.  If, like me, you grew up in the church, you have probably heard these verses discussed more times than you can remember.

However, in reading Paul Wesley Chilcote's Recapturing the Wesleys' Vision, he uses this passage in relation to mission, which I do not think I have ever heard before.  Chilcote is reminding readers that the goal of the Christian is to inwardly cling to God and outwardly spread the word of God.  No argument here.

But I don't think that I have ever heard anyone discuss John 15 with an emphasis on the fact that the branches have a role - to bear fruit.  It is clearly stated in John 15 that this is the case, especially if you read past the first few verses of the chapter.  But I don't think I have ever heard it called out with the vigor that Chilcote applied.

Amazing that you can still see new messages in the Bible after years of reading and being taught.  Even in passages you know!

God Bless,
JAy.
