The General's Big Reveals

OK, so I have been out of touch for a while. Last week was a much enjoyed vacation. Prior to that, work was busy and I am a bit of a slacker, so attention went elsewhere from my blog.

But I wanted to post a "Cars" entry related to two big reveals from General Motors recently (actually, almost co-incident with each other).

The first reveal, and probably the most recognized if you are, like me, an American, was when Chevrolet pulled the wraps off of the production version of the 2010 Camaro. Intended to be reminiscent of the classic Camaro (not the mid-90's version, thankfully, though I loved them at the time - but I digress), it is an attractive vehicle, even if if does look like it could be a platform mate with the Dodge Challenger (note the similar hip-line bump over the rear wheel-well). I look forward to seeing one in person, even if I don't have any plans to ever own one.

The second reveal was the Opel Insignia. While this is a European car, I was interested due to the recent sharing of vehicles between Opel and Saturn. Being a thoroughly redesigned mid-size vehicle (including a new name and Opel insignia in Europe), there is credible talk of this also replacing the Saturn Aura within a few years. Let's hope so. While the Aura is a respectable vehicle with at least some visual appeal, the Insignia is gorgeous, looking like something that could rival the autos from BMW and Mercedes, at least in the looks department. This thing just looks like a high end performance sedan. Now we have to wait to see if if measures up in the actual performance category.

So, that is what I see as the big news in the GM camp last month. Here's to hoping that the seemingly increased emphasis in cars that people actually want to be seen driving will result in some positive cash for GM. Goodness knows that they could use the help financially!

God Bless,
JAy.
